Life Hacks for Toddlers[/caption]
Dear Mama of Three,
It’s hard. There is no easy way around it- days are long, patience runs short, and worst of all, you are probably not getting enough sleep. I get it and I want to give you a hug. Well, a hug and a large cup of coffee.
Like you, I’m learning everyday, but these are a few of the things making life less crazy. As a three-toddler-mom, there are challenges unique to our situation that demand our creativity and problem-solving skills. My little ones are rambunctious cuddle machines, but let’s be honest- they love to secretly make mischief and wait for my reaction, too.
I’m currently deep in the land of potty training twins, picky eaters, and short attention spans. Hopefully these life hacks will ease some of your three tot troubles!
1. Kitchen Scissors
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: get yourself a trusty pair of kitchen scissors that are exclusively for toddler food. It’s my favorite time saving tip, and literally the thing I use most often in the kitchen.
For some reason, I am utterly unable to cut food into edible squares using a knife when a trio of tots is whining around me. We are usually playing outside until right before meal time. On any given day I have definitely made them wait too long to eat, now they are starving, and I just can’t figure out knife skills in these conditions.
I use these scissors to cut noodles, vegetables, pizza, and pretty much anything. Life with toddlers is all about eating (ok, and pooping), and having a pair of these on hand makes life easier.
2. A sweet potato everyday
In their sweet third year of life, my twins have become ultra picky about food. I swear it happened over night. However, one thing they will still eat consistently is the ever-healthy baked sweet potato. Served steaming and with a pat of butter, it’s a hold-out as one of their favorite foods. I hear a lot of talk about toddler constipation and sweet potatoes keep things going in this department. We’ve never had an issue, which brings me to my next tip…
3. The Travel Potty Every Family Needs
Have you ever seen three toddlers and a grown lady in a public restroom stall? You can hear my screams of “don’t touch thaaaaaaat!” and “do not even touch that” for miles around. I learned pretty quickly that with baby plus two potty training toddlers, if I’m alone, then public potties are out of the question. This OXO travel potty fits on the floor in the back of the mini-van and kids can sit down, do their business, and you throw the nifty bag away. It can also be used on top of any regular toilet. A discreet travel bag arrives with it and the whole contraption is my favorite.
4. The ultimate diaper combo
Along with potty training comes a great realization: our diaper consumption is slowing down. True story: there was a time I was changing over 20 diapers per day. We always stuck to this combo and I’m still a believer: Regular Luvs during the day and Pampers Baby Dry at night. Plus, are you using Amazon to deliver your diapers? We get our LUVS from Amazon Prime and they are the exact same price as stores, plus free delivery. Thank you!
5. How about you?
Stop what you are doing and drink a glass of water. Put on an episode of Daniel Tiger and make yourself a real lunch on a plate, then sit down and eat it. Talk to your partner and schedule your full night of sleep, put it on the calendar. Go for a walk alone when you get a chance. I get it, you actually have NO time, but try to do just one of those things. You are a mom of three and it is not easy- make sure to take care of yourself!
Like I said at the beginning, it’s not easy. However, it does make me think of that saying…
If you think my hands are full, you should see my heart.
